It's paradoxical that we call exceptionally fine glass
"crystal" when it's not a crystal at all. Silica (the principal
component of glass) is in a crystalline state, but when it is heated to
a molten state, and then carefully cooled until it solidifies, the
resulting atomic structure is amorphous; lacking the long-range
periodicity or order that a true crystal would have. Nevertheless, we
use the term to describe glass that is exceptionally pure and sparkling.
It's the brilliance, or high refractive index, that distinguishes
crystal from everyday glass products and is often enhanced by the
addition of lead or barium
